Get Ready for the Code is suitable for native-speaking preschoolers or Japanese elementary-school students who are starting out on written English. Children who have mastered their ABC's are ready to start Explode the Code, which starts with a review of consonants and moves into one-syllable words, word families, vowels, and so on. The material is interesting, sometimes funny, without being too overwhelming. Most importantly, it is user-friendly and provides an effective way to reinforce reading and writing skills. At first glance, one might wonder if the graphics are too simple for today's high-tech kids. However, the proof is in the progress. Kids can work on these books with an adult or on their own, which is a confidence builder.

I originally bought this to use as a homework workbook for my Japanese sho-gakko kid's class. These books are well graded and fun. It was good to be able to choose a level that matched well to the individual child's needs. The particular one I ordered was for my 5th grade son who speaks English but whose written first language is Japanese. It's just the right level and not 'childish' so he likes doing it. I like that there is room for your own ideas and helps in the development of the 'inquiry' skill.

It's a little simple - but great for someone who's just starting to read. We could read it through, talk about the importance of that, and see how we can incorporate the value(s) in our daily life this week - check back next week. I would recommend this for 4-5 years' beginners readers.

5-02526 - Clifford's Phonics Fun Pack 1

The great thing about this book is that there is a different voice reading each story. The children can also choose to read at their own pace so they can follow it easily and enjoy it more. The CD and Book set was perfect for my 3 year-old-daughter, but for my 6 year old, it was a little too easy. It’s a great teaching material as well as being fun for kids!

I use this material for strengthening the reading skills of the kids in my elementary school class. It's a great tool for many reasons. It teaches phonics in a methodological way, and includes the vocabulary list so the students can review. There are lots of materials to teach phonics, but I would recommend this because it’s easy, the exercises flow well, and you will definitely get results.

As I expected, the students knew about 'Big Beanie's Bed'. They were so excited and said "I know this book, it's my favorite!" The level of the book was perfect for my elementary school students. 'Restaurant' is a well-known book and the illustrations are wonderful. Students of varying English-speaking skill levels will enjoy it.

At present I am using them at the beginning of my small classes to greet the students. They enjoy answering the puppets; the dragon or the princess. I also use the puppets to explain games to the students. It catches their attention. And with two or three puppets they can see how a game or activity works.

I really like that you can learn phonics, words, and rhythm (reading and writing) all in one book. It even includes a15 page mini book, as well as letter and picture cards. It’s really reasonably priced. It’s good for use in a class as well as at home. Use the book with the CD to increase listening skills. I think students who can write Japanese or have just started to study English, will learn the foundation of phonics from this book.

I'm using it for my private returnee student who is 7 years old. It's good reading practice and I especially like the DIY books included as part of the text. The flash cards at the back are also very useful. I want to continue to the next level of the series. I recommend it to Mums and teachers who want their kids to use real foreign material rather than ESL texts, as it gives you a good idea of what level children of a certain age are in English speaking countries. It is probably good up to grade 1 or 2 for regular Japanese kids but a lower grade for bilingual and native speakers basic reading and alphabet knowledge.

The one set includes 25 books so I can use 25 different books in one lesson or one book per lesson. The CD has three different narrations so you can tailor it depending on the age group. You can even copy the workbook and distribute it to each of the students. If your child loves to read, it’s good to use at home as well.

My 5 year old son, Tomo, who is just beginning to read, says, "The stories were fun". He felt very good about his reading ability because some days he could read 3 or 4 books in a row to his little brother.
